Plans are underway for a new 700 hectare recreation and tourism facility in the heart of Salford. Salford Forest Park will provide opportunities for recreational, sporting and leisure activities while ensuring protection of the countryside and wildlife. Peel Holdings, who also own the Manchester Ship Canal Company and the Trafford Centre, will develop existing woodland and countryside to create the Salford Forest Park. Plans centre around re-establishing the Manchester racecourse, closed in 1963, to allow racing over jumps or on the flat to take place in front of up to 20,000 spectators. Other proposals for the area include an international three-day eventing course and indoor riding school, visitor and activity centres and an 18-hole golf course as well as hotel, public house and restaurant developments.
